With the Amish, farming is a way of life, passed down from father to son.  But there isn't always enough land to go around, so more and more these days the younger generations are having to find alternative careers.  Still, when possible, farming is the occupation of choice.  Rampant development in areas once predominantly Amish farmland is making land scarce and taxes prohibitive for those who till the land for a living.  The farming dream is realized by ever fewer Amish sons.

In this painting, a father and son survey their land, contemplating the future.  A hazy fog undulates over the fields, forming the apparition of men and horses plowing the old-fashioned way.  It is a good omen.
